The chakras are the energy centres of the body. They are located within the astral body which is the energy field within our physical body. The chakras run along the spine starting at the base through to the crown of the head. We cannot actually see the astral body which is also why we can’t see the chakras.
Each chakra radiates a particular energy and colour and is linked to a particular gland in the endocrine system. It has long been known that each chakra also corresponds to different physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of our being. It is believed that any blockages or imbalances within these energy centres can lead to physical, emotional or psychological disorders and conversely bringing balance to these centres can lead to greater health and wellbeing.
Although there are 114 chakras throughout the entire body (some believe this number to be infinite) there are 7 primary or main chakras that get most of the attention.
Root Chakra – Muladhara Chakra
Sacral Chakra – Svadhisthana Chakra
Solar Plexus Chakra – Manipura Chakra
Heart Chakra – Anahata Chakra
Throat Chakra – Vishuddha Chakra
Third Eye Chakra – Ajna Chakra
Crown Chakra - Sahasrara Chakra
There are many views on the shape of the chakras from whirling discs, lotus flower shapes to cone shaped but nobody can be certain because the chakras cannot be seen with the eye or by any device. The ancient scriptures actually believe them to be ball like or sphere shaped. There are also varying views on the size of each chakra – some believe them to be a foot in radius, whereas others believe they change depending on the energy flow.
There are specific vibrations, colours, symbols and sounds associated with each of the seven chakras and we will cover them below.
